SAF
💡 The Next Generation of Sustainable Aviation Fuel
Electric-based fuels, known as Power-to-Liquid (PtL) or #eFuels, are part of the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) category ✈️
🔹 They are produced using renewable electricity, water, and CO₂ (captured from the atmosphere) to create synthetic crude oil, which is then refined into jet fuel.
🔹 Although PtL fuels are not yet produced on an industrial scale, they are viewed as a promising and scalable environmental solution for the future of aviation.

💡 How Lufthansa Group’s SAF Option Really Works
ℹ️ When a passenger purchases the SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) option, the specific fuel is not used on their individual flight.
Booking a more sustainable trip does not increase SAF usage on that exact route, but rather contributes to its overall deployment across Lufthansa Group operations.
🔴 The key point: SAF is actively used in Lufthansa Group’s flight network, which directly supports CO₂ emission reductions.
✅ Lufthansa Group ensures that the SAF amount purchased is applied within six months of the passenger’s departure date.
💡 FCM Travel Express encourages customers to choose #GreenFares and support sustainable aviation together.
🌍 Let’s take care of our planet — together 🌱
🌍 Fly consciously with Lufthansa Group and FCM Travel Express
Passengers travelling with Lufthansa Group can actively reduce CO₂ emissions from their flights by using SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) and supporting effective climate protection projects.
🔹 The CO₂ offset option can be selected and purchased directly during the booking process with FCM Travel Express.
🔹 Lufthansa Group also offers Green Fares, a fare option that includes a fixed SAF component.
🔹 This allows travellers to make a meaningful contribution to more sustainable aviation.
💡 Lufthansa Group ensures that the required amount of SAF for partial CO₂ offsetting is integrated into its flight operations within six months of purchase.

🌍 Sustainable innovation – how Lufthansa uses SAF
💫 The Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) currently used by Lufthansa Group is produced from biogenic residues such as used cooking oils, through the HEFA process (Hydroprocessed Esters & Fatty Acids).
🔹 The CO₂ in these residues was previously absorbed from the atmosphere by plants, creating a near-closed carbon cycle.
🔹 When SAF is burned, it releases only as much CO₂ as was once removed from the air by its source materials.
🔹 While the production and transport of SAF still generate some emissions, Lufthansa’s biogenic SAF has an at least 80% smaller carbon footprint compared with conventional fossil jet fuel.
🔹 The Lufthansa Group explicitly excludes palm oil as a feedstock for SAF production.
🔹 The SAF used meets EU Renewable Energy Directive II (RED II) standards, which define strict sustainability criteria.

🌍 Cleaner skies with sustainable aviation fuel
💡 Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) refers to all aviation fuels that, unlike conventional kerosene, are produced without the use of fossil resources such as crude oil.
🔹 SAF can be produced from a range of biogenic and non-biogenic sources through innovative production processes.
🔹 It is a true alternative to fossil-based jet fuel and plays a vital role in aviation’s energy transition.
🔹 SAF forms a key part of Lufthansa Group’s sustainability strategy, helping to reduce carbon emissions and promote greener air travel. 👏
🌱 Fly smarter. Fly sustainably.
